Ed Asner, the Hollywood legend who grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, once told The Star that he would probably be buried in Los Angeles.

Asner’s parents are buried at Sheffield Cemetery in Kansas City, along with “much of my outer family,” he said in a 2012 interview with The Star. Had he given any thought to where he might one day be buried?

“Only fleetingly,” he said. His final resting place would most likely be in the Los Angeles area: “All my kids are out here.”

Apparently, he changed his mind since then: Asner was buried with his parents and siblings at Sheffield last month. The six-time Emmy and five-time Golden Globe winner died at 91 from natural causes at the end of August.

His family’s large headstone reads simply, “Asner.” Well-wishers left small stones on top to pay their respects following the actor’s burial.

Congregation Beth Israel Abraham and Voliner, an Orthodox synagogue in Overland Park, oversees Sheffield Cemetery. The private site is the second-oldest Jewish cemetery in town.

Asner was a graduate of Wyandotte High School and the son of Morris Asner, owner of the Asner Iron & Metal junkyard in Kansas City, Kansas.

In a 2016 interview, Asner told The Star that working at his father’s junkyard prepared him to play tackle on the high school’s football team. The actor’s brother, Benjamin Asner, stayed local to the Kansas City area and ran the successful record store Capers Corner in the 1970s.

Asner spent much of his adult life in California as his career blossomed, with acting credits including “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Lou Grant” as well as family movies like “Elf” and “Up.”

He served as the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1981 until 1985 and featured prominently in the organization’s 1980 strike. He frequently advocated for progressive causes, supporting single-payer health care and Democratic candidates for state and national office.
