Another infamous Wisconsin killer is getting some screen time on streaming video this fall.

Streaming service MGM+ announced Tuesday that it has acquired "Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein," a four-episode true-crime documentary series about the Wisconsin serial killer. The series, scheduled to premiere in September, has James Buddy Day as director and executive producer; his credits include the horror-thriller series "Fall River" and "Blumhouse's Compendium of Horror."

In 1957, Gein, of Plainfield in Waushara County, confessed to killing two local women and to digging up bodies from from graveyards and using body parts and skin to make everything from trophies to lampshades and seat covers. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a series of psychiatric prison facilities in Wisconsin. He died in 1984 at age 77.

Gein's crimes inspired several landmark horror stories, including the novel "Psycho" by Milwaukee writer Robert Bloch, which was the basis for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 shock-horror classic, and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

With "new reveals and never-before-heard recordings," MGM+ says, the documentary series will explore Gein's childhood, including his "twisted" relationship with his mother, the murders that led to his arrest and the discovery of his "house of horrors."

“This gripping and disturbing docuseries shines a light on an infamous chapter in our true-crime history,” Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said in a statement. “Psycho takes an in-depth look at not only the life of one of the most notorious serial killers of our time, but also explores the impact his crimes had on both the victims and our culture.”

The news of the new series on Gein — whose story has inspired everything from thrillers to a cult-favorite musical — follows one of 2022's biggest streaming hits, "Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." Produced by Ryan Murphy ("American Horror Story," "Pose"), "Dahmer" became one of Netflix's biggest hits ever, passing 1 billion views in its first 60 days on the streaming service.

"Dahmer" also has collected awards at the Golden Globes, the NAACP Image Awards and the Critics' Choice Television Awards. And it's expected to be in the mix when the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations are announced July 12.
