EDD mailed documents with Social Security numbers, state auditor says

The Employment Development Department is mailing documents with social security numbers printed on the forms inside, according to the State Auditor. Last year, the auditor recommended EDD remove the number to help protect consumers. But so far, that recommendation has not been followed. The documents put claimants at risk of identity theft, and the state auditor said the EDD had no short-term plan to remove the social security numbers. “Because of that risk, we recommended that EDD discontinue its use of full SSNs on documents it mails to claimants and that EDD prioritize altering some of its most commonly mailed documents by March 2020,” the state auditor said. “Although EDD generally agreed with our recommendations when we issued our report in early 2019, it has not fully implemented them in the time since.”
