Edgewood High School Hall of Fame inducts five new members

Sep. 21—Five alumni will be inducted into the Edgewood High School Hall of Fame, including a current staff member, during a ceremony Sept. 29 in the school's auditorium. They will join the 78 individuals and a family of seven alumni siblings as members of the school's Hall of Fame, which was begun in 2011.

The Edgewood High School Alumni Association and the Edgewood High School administration jointly sponsor the Hall of Fame, which serves the dual purpose of recognizing extraordinary achievements of alumni, former staff and community supporters as well as providing role models for current students, staff and the community. Plaques honoring the prospective inductees will join those of current members displayed on a main corridor wall at the school.

"The prominent display of these plaques is a daily reminder to students and staff that this school provides a rich and diverse learning environment, and some that has served as the foundation upon which many of our successful community members have built their careers," said Principal Sandra McMichael. "We are proud to recognize their accomplishments and the role that this school played in their achievements."

This year's inductees are:

David Richmond, Class of 1962, lettered in track and was a bronze medal winner in the county science fair. He also served in student government. He earned his bachelor's degree in medical science, Phi Beta Kappa, and his medical degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Maryland, where he was winner of the Balder Scholarship Award for academic achievement.

George R. Fancher, Class of 1972, has been a custodian at Edgewood High School for 32 years, serving in a variety of capacities including his current position as assistant chief, while working as an auditor for a local business.

After graduation, the Harford County native took accounting classes at Harford and Essex community colleges, earning certification as an auditor. He worked for the Comfort Inn/Ramada hotel chains for 38 years, retiring two years ago.

Robert L. Frisch, Class of 1973, has spent his adult life as a police officer, teacher and an elected member of the Board of Education of Harford County. At Edgewood High, he was a four-year member of the soccer and tennis teams and took part in student government while serving as a student aide before beginning a 20-year career in law enforcement.

Cardell Williams, Class of 1978, a former two-time All-American track star at the U.S. Military Academy, was inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame last year. A master high school math teacher with 21 years in the classroom, Williams was a cross country county champion and a state medal-winning distance runner while at Edgewood.

Kyndra A. (Brown) Jackson, Class of 1997, is a public health leader and nurse educator with over 20 years of leadership in military and civilian hospitals/clinics, Department of Defense laboratories and public health agencies. She is currently director of public health outreach services at Mary's Center in Washington.

She was an honor's student in every quarter at Edgewood HIgh School, earning a scholastic letter with an academic excellence pin and scholastic star. She was a two-year member of the National Honor Society and elected secretary in her senior year. She was also secretary of the student government association. Kyndra played softball and volleyball all four years at the school and was volleyball team captain her senior year.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place in the school auditorium attended by invited guests, students, staff, and government/community/school system officials. Following the ceremony will be a tour of the building for the new Hall of Famers and others, and a luncheon honoring the inductees. The new Hall of Fame members will ride in vintage cars in the Edgewood High homecoming parade on Sept. 30.

A tailgate will be sponsored by the alumni association prior to the homecoming football game versus North Harford, and existing hall of famers along with the new inductees will parade on the field and be introduced to those in the stands just before the game.

The Hall of Fame provides a way to link the community with the school while celebrating the school's past, said Karen Carey, president of the EHS Alumni Association.

"Each year when a new group of hall of famers is added, it just reaffirms what those of us who have been associated with the school for an extended period of time already knew," Carey said in a statement. "It's been the extraordinary students, staff members, and community supporters who have been the keys to the school's success."
