Have your say on Edison development, traffic, houses of worship at master plan discussion

EDISON – Township officials should anticipate a lively discussion about Edison’s master plan during the first public workshop set for later this month, if comments posted on its webpage are any indication.

The workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Edison Council Chambers, and residents already have offered comments about traffic, overdevelopment, flooding, protecting open space, the need for more schools and even the future of Menlo Park Mall.

Updating the township's master plan became a campaign issue during last year's mayoral race, especially as residents in the Silver Lake Road neighborhood in South Edison fought plans for a massive warehouse there, and residents in a Plainfield Road neighborhood fought plans for multi-family housing on the site of the shuttered Charlie Brown's.

The master plan is the township's long-range blueprint that includes a community-supported vision and strategy for the future decisions on development, capital spending and the township's general policy direction. The current master plan was adopted in 2003 and reexamined in 2011, according to the website.

Residents are being encouraged to participate in the updating of the master plan to ensure the recommendations reflect the community's current priorities and needs. The planning process includes two public workshops, neighborhood meetings, an online survey and other targeted strategies to learn about issues and opportunities.

Residents’ input is sought to provide goals and ideas that will help shape the way the community progresses in terms of growth and development, public parks, new housing, improvements to traffic lights and intersections, growth of public services and township-hosted events, according to a video explaining the master plan.

Residents are encouraged to visit the master plan website and offer comments to help create the future vision of the township. The comments page can be converted to different languages.

The website offers opportunities for residents to provide comments on areas related to parks and open space, traffic and parking, arts, culture and events, shopping and restaurants, sidewalks and streetscape and any other areas.

Residents can offer master plan comments here.
