Edison Family Restaurant reopens after addressing health violations

EDISON – After closing for nearly two weeks, the Edison Family Restaurant on Oak Tree Road, known locally for its quart-size homemade soups, was permitted to reopen last week with certain conditions.

Those conditions include the removal of an old refrigerator, repair of a small piece of ceiling and ongoing pest control treatment and monitoring, according to Jay Elliot, township director of health and human services.

The restaurant, located at 1900 Oak Tree Road, was closed July 26 following a health inspection in which several violations were discovered.

The July 26 retail food inspection report cited several areas in which the restaurant was not in compliance, including preventing contamination from hands by handwashing in a timely manner prior to work and after using the restroom; food protected from contamination and food contact surfaces properly cleaned and sanitized; food properly labeled in original container; food protected from potential contamination; and the presence of insects/rodents.

The report included remarks about odors from an open dumpster lid; an employee eating in the kitchen prep area; live cockroaches on a storage shelf; lack of air conditioning in a section of the dining room and dead flies in door grooves.

The inspection was prompted by a customer's complaint.

According to Elliot, re-inspections on Aug. 5 and Aug. 8 showed significant improvement, but there were still residual pest control issues.

Elliot said a re-inspection on Aug. 9 showed verified abatement of the violations cited on July 26, and the restaurant was approved to reopen with conditions.

"We will follow up to assure these items are addressed and sanitation is being maintained," Elliot said.

Edison Family Restaurant, located in the northern section of the township not far from the intersection with Grove Avenue, has been open since 1978.
