From the editor: The comics page is changing, but the laughs will remain

One of the first things that newspaper editors learn is that no one likes to read bad news all the time.

People sometimes can’t stand reading another crime story or the account of a bad accident on Route 287. They’ll read stories about taxes, budgets and development, but those stories are like broccoli – they’re good for you and you know should you should like them, but you don’t them need every day.

That’s why we enjoy reading the comics.

We all need a break from the cascade of bad news flung at us from every direction. And in these divisive times, we need a reminder that we’re all human and everything will be alright if we just take a moment for a laugh.

That’s why comics play an important part in our newspapers. We know how important it is to have a balanced diet.

Beginning Oct. 2, you may see some changes to our comics page.

The comics pages will be standardized across most of the national USA TODAY Network. We will be keeping most of your cherished favorites while also introducing some fresh faces and new perspectives.
