Edmond North’s Liesel Kehoe wins 5K title at Nike Outdoor Nationals

Edmond North distance runner Liesel Kehoe accomplished an impressive feat Thursday.

Competing at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon, she won the five-kilometer championship race in 16 minutes, 38.47 seconds.

Kehoe, who will enter her junior year in the fall, finished nearly eight seconds ahead of her nearest competitor at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field as Charlotte Richman of Portland, Oregon placed second with a time of 16:46.45.

Kehoe’s performance comes after a breakout sophomore year in which she broke the 3,200-meter state record twice. She placed second in the event at the Class 6A state meet in Ardmore and was third in the 1,600.

Kehoe also had a stellar cross country season in the fall and placed fifth at the state meet at Edmond Santa Fe.

Broken Arrow’s Payton Hinkle has been the best distance runner in the state over the past few years. She graduated and is headed to Oklahoma State, and Kehoe will likely replace her as the leader of Oklahoma high school distance running.

OU women's basketball to play in France

The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team will head overseas this summer for a 10-day trip to France that features three games of international competition in preparation for the 2022-23 season. The Sooners depart Oklahoma August 3 and return on August 13.

Oklahoma, in partnership with Complete Sports Management, opens its foreign tour in Monaco when it takes on a select team in the city-state on Aug. 5. Next, Oklahoma travels to Lyon, France where it'll take on Roanne on Aug. 9.

The final test comes in the French capital Paris when the Sooners take on a French select team in the City of Light on Aug. 11.

The preseason trip is not limited to just on-the-court action, as the Sooners will explore Cannes, Monaco, Monte Carlo, Lyon and Paris. In addition, the team will have countless sightseeing opportunities, guided tours and an excursion with Paris Saint-Germain.

Texas' Melendez named top college player

National home run leader Ivan Melendez of Texas won the Dick Howser Trophy on Friday as the outstanding player in college baseball.

Melendez’s 32 home runs are most in Division I since 2003. He leads the nation with 94 RBIs and an .886 slugging percentage.

The junior first baseman from El Paso, Texas, is the fourth Longhorn to win the Howser Trophy.

Oklahoma Freedom begins inaugural season

Oklahoma’s first-ever professional bull riding team, the Oklahoma Freedom, will begin their quest for the first PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Team Series Championship this weekend, as the preseason for the inaugural PBR Team Series that got underway Friday night in Bismarck, North Dakota.

The Freedom are one of eight founding teams in the new PBR Team Series – playing five-on-five bull riding games to crown a team champion Nov. 4-6 in Las Vegas.

Former NASCAR driver involved in fatal crash

Former NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer was involved in a crash that killed a pedestrian in southwest Missouri earlier this month.

Police say Bowyer's vehicle struck a woman walking on an exit ramp on June 5 near Osage Beach. Bowyer stopped immediately and called 911. Police say 47-year-old Mary Jane Simmons of Camdenton died at the scene.

The crash report says Bowyer, a native of Emporia, Kansas, provided a roadside blood sample that recorded no alcohol. Bowyer, a Fox Sports racing analyst, retired from NASCAR in 2020 after winning 10 Cup Series races in 15 years.

Former governor buys Nashville Predators

The chairman of the Nashville Predators has agreed to sell the majority of his stake in the NHL team to former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam.

The Predators announced the agreement Friday. No details of the purchase price were disclosed for a franchise valued recently at $680 million by Sportico.

Haslam's brother owns the NFL’s Cleveland Browns and the MLS’ Columbus Crew.

OKC DODGERS 12, RENO ACES 8: The Dodgers won their eighth game in the last 10 contests with a 12-8 victory over Reno Thursday night at Greater Nevada Field. Oklahoma City overcame a three-run deficit with a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by Jake Amaya's grand slam. Jason Martin also homered for the Dodgers.

NFL: The NFL has suspended New York Giants linebacker Justin Hilliard without pay for the first two games of the regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Hilliard will be eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

COLLEGE: Longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop is retiring, ending a run that included coaching NBA star Stephen Curry with the Wildcats and ranking among the Division I men’s basketball’s winningest active coaches. His son, associate head coach Matt McKillop, will take over as coach after working as an assistant since 2008.

MLB: Anthony Rendon will miss the rest of the regular season. The Los Angeles Angels say their third baseman will undergo surgery for a right wrist injury.
