Education Briefs: CSU Pueblo President chosen for prestigious Fulbright program

Colorado State University Pueblo President Timothy Mottet is among 12 individuals chosen to participate in the upcoming Fulbright International Education Administrators (IEA) Awards program in October 2024.

The two-week seminar is designed to strengthen communication between education leaders in the United States and France. Participants in the seminar will conduct research on educational reform and the efficacy of strategic partnerships in higher education.

“I’ve always believed that individuals should be life-long learners,” Mottet said. “As an active author, researcher, and higher education leader and advocate, the Fulbright experience will provide an opportunity for me to learn more about international post-secondary systems, as I continue my service to CSU Pueblo and to Colorado and our CSU System.”

Central High Class of '59 awards $5,000 scholarships to 4 outstanding '23 graduates

Alumni from the Pueblo Central High School Class of 1959 have announced the awarding of four $5,000 scholarships to recent Central graduates.

Hannah Arellano, Sara Matthew, MariAna Santisteven and Ivy Zipp are the four recipients of the Class of 1959's seventh annual batch of scholarships. The four graduates were evaluated based on various factors including academic performance, community involvement and extra-curricular involvement. Interviews of potential recipients were conducted by a committee of 13 Class of 1959 alumni.

Arellano, an aspiring veterinarian, will be attending the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. In addition to competing in basketball, cheerleading, softball and tennis, Arellano was an active member of Girl's Cabinet and worked 10 to 28-hour weeks at Baskin Robbins while attending Central.

Matthew plans to study biology and marine biology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. She earned academic letters in all eight semesters of high school and continues to volunteer with Paws for Life. She also participated in All-City Orchestra, band, National Honor Society and Technology Student Association.

Santisteven will attend Colorado State University Pueblo to study criminology. At Central, she was student body vice president and two-sport athlete and participated in Girl's Cabinet, Newman Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also participates in the Pueblo Police Explorers program and was a Father John Organization volunteer.

Zipp, who was president of Central's Environment and Gardening Club, plans to study environmental science in college. She graduated from Central as a junior, played two sports and was a member of Boys and Girls Clubs of Pueblo County. She also participated in Girl's Cabinet and National Honor Society.

Pueblo County Sheriff awards two $1,000 scholarships to local high schoolers

Cole Cooper and Trevor Hadaway each received $1,000 scholarships from Pueblo County Sheriff David Lucero's office.

Cooper graduated from Rye High School in the top 10 of his class with a 3.92 GPA. He will study engineering at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. At Rye, he was active in Future Farmers of America and played four sports. He also has done building restoration and maintenance work for his community.

Hadaway had a 4.29 GPA and was in the top 30 of his graduating class at Pueblo County High School. He plans to attend Colorado Mesa University and study mechanical engineering. He competed in baseball, marching band, jazz band and concert band while in high school. He also has been active in several community service projects.

CSU Pueblo's Rev 89.5 forms partnership with Denver's THE DROP 104.7

Rev 89.5, a local radio station owned by CSU Pueblo, has formed a partnership with Denver's THE DROP 104.7 to showcase independent hip hop and R&B artists on weekday evenings.

"The Kickback with Unique," one of THE DROP 104.7's most popular programs, is currently airing Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Rev 89.5.

THE DROP 104.7 also announced plans to bring event partnerships, local concerts, mentorships and student collaborations to Pueblo as a result of the partnership.
