Education briefs: East, County high schools to hold fall play performances

Student thespians from Pueblo East and Pueblo County high schools will host performances of their annual fall plays this week for students and community members.

The Pueblo East High School Drama Club's performances of "She Kills Monsters" in the Pueblo East High School auditorium will be the last performances in the 63-year-old school building at 9 Mac Neil Road. A new Pueblo East High School building will be completed in fall 2023.

"She Kills Monsters" is a dramatic comedy written by Qui Nguyen. It follows Agnes Evans, a 25-year-old teacher from Athens, Ohio. Grieving the death of her sister Tilly, Evans stumbles upon her late sister's "Dungeons and Dragons" notebook. Through the fantasy world of "Dungeons and Dragons," Evans learns more about Tilly and the challenges she faced.

"This is geared towards high school-aged students and young adults, which means it may contain some language and content not suitable for younger audiences," according to a content warning from the Pueblo East High School Drama Club. "We advise our audience to use their discretion when considering the attendance of younger children."

The Pueblo East High School Drama Club will perform "She Kills Monsters" at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 and 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. The show is free to attendees, but cash donations will be accepted at the door.

Pueblo County High School students to perform rendition of Louisa May Alcott classic

The Arts Academy at Pueblo County High School will host four public performances of "Little Women" in the Pueblo County High School auditorium from Nov. 10-13.

Performances from Nov. 10-12 will be held at 7 p.m. The final performance on Nov. 13 will be at 2 p.m. Admission costs $5 for students and $10 for adults. The Arts Academy at Pueblo County High School's performances of "Little Women" are based on actress and playwright Kate Hamill's rendition of the 19th-century Louisa May Alcott novel of the same name.

"Every show will be different," director Taylor Gilman said. "You could see the show multiple nights, and you would see different actors in the roles. Our academy has so many incredible actors, we had no choice but to cast multiple people in each of the lead roles. What is so amazing is that each actor brings their own unique characteristics to their part. It is really quite beautiful.”

"Little Women" tells the story of Jo March and her three sisters who grow up during the U.S. Civil War. The production explores issues of gender roles, societal expectations and class. In addition to the four public performances, the Arts Academy at Pueblo County High School will host special performances for Vineland Elementary School students, who are reading "Little Women" in their classes.
