Pueblo County high school educator Kennedy Pugh has been named Colorado's 2022 Outstanding Speech, Debate, Theater and Academics Educator by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The multi-talented Pugh is the school's speech and debate coach, artist in residence and teaching artist coordinator. He was selected for the award for demonstrating "outstanding service and unselfish devotion to interscholastic speech, debate, theatre and academics programs," the NFHS said.

"We never do it alone," Pugh said in a statement. "I am honored to receive this recognition. It has been impressive what my colleagues at The Arts Academy at Pueblo County High School continue to do. I am thankful for the community of Pueblo that has supported my efforts to enhance the creative industry in our community."

Crossroads Turning Points hosting youth art show May 20

Crossroads' Turning Points and its Youth in Action team are accepting entries for the “We Are the Change” art show, which will take place Friday, May 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The show is an effort to encourage healthy choices and prevent youth substance abuse, and the theme — of the show and the art — is positivity and change, Crossroads said in a statement.

Any original work of art — drawings, paintings, photography, sculptures, and more — can be submitted for the show, which will be held at the Art Alliance Studios at 107 S. Grand Ave.

While the event is tailored toward artists aged 25 and under, no art will be turned away. The organizers particularly welcome art by people in recovery, their statement said.

Because the art will be displayed in a professional art gallery, it needs to be framed (where applicable) and gallery-ready. Assistance is available to artists who are unable to buy a frame.

There will also be an open mic event at the show for musicians, poets, and other non-visual artists. Sign-ups will be available for the open mic on the day of the exhibit.

Visitors will vote for their favorite artworks, and the winners will receive prizes.
