Education notebook: Abilene ISD students to receive free meals next school year

Abilene ISD announced in a news release that breakfast and lunch will be provided free of charge at every campus in the district throughout the 2022-23 school year.

The service will be made possible through the Community Eligibility Provision, a non-pricing meal service option for school districts under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs, the release said.

Through the CEP, collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price and paid student meals is eliminated, instead allowing schools to offer meals at no charge.

In addition to providing nutritious meals to students, the district said, this new approach will reduce burdens on families and school leaders.

For information about the program, contact the Student Nutrition Department at 325-677-1444, Ext. 8152.
