Education Roundup: BBB, Pro Football Hall of Fame announce scholarships

CANTON − The Better Business Bureau is partnering with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to offer the Students of Integrity Scholarship for graduating seniors in Stark County.

The scholarship reflects the importance of ethics, integrity, honesty and trust as the key principles for the BBB as well as the values from the Hall of Fame that include commitment, integrity, courage, respect, and honesty.

Potential candidates will be nominated by their perspective schools. Nominations may only be submitted by a teacher, administrator, coach or staff employed by Stark County school systems. A link to the scholarship page can be found on BBB’s website at bit.ly/integrityscholarship. To qualify, student must be a senior expected to graduate at the end of the current school year and must be attending a private, public, or online school located in Stark County Ohio.

Five students will be awarded a $2,500 scholarship. Students must utilize this scholarship for any type of post-high school continued learning path, such as a four-year college, community college, or trade school to further their education.

A panel of judges made up of representatives of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Better Business Bureau will review all submissions and select the five winners. All winners will be honored at an event in early February.

Stark has four semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships

Four Stark County students have been named semifinalists for the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Area semifinalists are Jordan D. Schwartz of Alliance High School, Garett W. Holleran and Jessica M. Stewart of Louisville High School and Shannon V. Griswold of Hoover High School.

Jenna R. Fink of Dalton High School also was named a semifinalist.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes those who earned the highest score on the SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in each state. The high school seniors have the chance to win one of the 7,250 scholarships that are worth nearly $28 million. Winners will be notified in the spring.

Stark County Catholic Schools marketing director receives national fellowship

PERRY TWP. − Stark County Catholic Schools Marketing Director Kristie Cramer has been awarded a one-year fellowship with the American Federation for Children. The School Leaders Fellowship looks to further educate participants on the policy and advocacy process of education and school choice marketing strategies to help increase enrollment.

Cramer was selected for her outstanding leadership in marketing and enrollment for Catholic education in Ohio. She is one of only two people chosen from Ohio to participate in this national fellowship. Cramer attended a kickoff conference for the 2022 School Leaders Fellowship cohort in Scottsdale, Arizona. Subsequent virtual seminars will be held bimonthly through June 2023 when the fellowship wraps up with a conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Participating in the AFC School Leader Fellowship provides practical, hands-on experiences that help empower educators to advocate on behalf of children and families in a manner that affects educational policy.

Cramer is a 1994 Central Catholic graduate and has served as the marketing director of Holy Cross Catholic Schools since 2014, Stark County Catholic Schools, and now Central Catholic since 2017. Previous to her time in this role, she spent her career in the communications departments at Georgetown University, George Mason University, Dartmouth College, and Case Western University. Cramer also has a long history as a debate coach, including 14 years at Central.
