Education roundup: Law Enforcement Expo at Stark State this week

JACKSON TWP. – A Law Enforcement Expo is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday in Stark State College’s Business and Entrepreneurial Center, 6200 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township.

The event, open to all, will highlight career opportunities such as police officer, park police, watercraft officer, wildlife officer, BCI agent, undercover drug agent, transit or airport police, gaming agent, detective, SWAT officer and more. The expo also will feature SSC training programs for law enforcement careers as well as more than 20 local and state departments and agencies with available law enforcement positions.

The Canton Police Department SWAT team and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad will be in the spotlight, along with K9 maneuvers and drone demonstrations.

Stark State’s Career Services experts also will be on hand with tips about job-seeking skills, including interviewing, resumes and more.

Kids’ College returns to Stark State

JACKSON TWP. – Kids’ College at Stark State College is back this summer after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Registration begins Tuesday online or at an event from 5 to 7 p.m. that will include tours of the College’s Business and Entrepreneurial Center at 6200 Frank Ave. NW, where Kids’ College classes are held.

Kids’ College is Stark State’s popular summer program that develops students’ interests and creativity through fun and unique learning opportunities. Held during June, students can sign up for one, two, three or all four weeks of the sessions offered for grades one to three and four to seven. Classes cover academic enrichment, fine arts, physical movement, STEM and hobbies and recreation.

Medical scholarships available

JACKSON TWP. – The Stark County Medical Society Auxiliary-Charitable Fund is accepting applications for the 2022-23 academic year. Scholarships are awarded to select students who show promise in their chosen health care field of study. Consideration is given to students who are within one to two years of completing their course of study. Students are encouraged to apply once they have completed a year of their professional study

Applicant eligibility criteria:

  • Resident of Stark County/ graduate from a Stark County high school

  • Nearing completion of a year in an accredited health care program in the state of Ohio

  • Completed application must be received by May 1

Perry grad wins speech championship

A Perry High School graduate has won a national speech championship at the college level.

Abreanna “Abby” Blose, a freshman studying journalism at Ohio University, was named a national champion in the Informative Speaking category in March at the Pi Kappa Delta Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

As part of the competition, Blose delivered a 10-minute speech to a panel of judges.

Bre Reidl, also a Perry High School graduate and an Ohio University student, placed second in the nation in the Small Group Discussion category.
