Education roundup: Mount Union gets grant for visual arts, media
ALLIANCE − The University of Mount Union’s Department of Visual Arts and Media recently was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Mary Renkert Wendling Foundation.
The grant will support the art and media programs within the department by aiding in the purchasing of new equipment to allow students the opportunity for more hands-on learning.
“Part of the grant will fund an update to the camera and studio equipment used by media majors to produce content while learning professional practices in their field," said Dr. Adelina Cooper, associate professor and chair of the Department of Visual Arts and Media. “The other part of the grant is needed to update and replace the spray booth used by art majors. This updated equipment will help keep students safe while working with a wide variety of chemicals and paints.”
Nursing scholarships available
MASSILLON – The Massillon Rotary Foundation Nursing Scholarship awards will be available for 2023. The amount of the scholarship has yet to be determined.
Eligible applicants must live or work in Massillon or Western Stark County and be accepted or enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Scholarships are eligible to be renewed annually.
Scholarship applications and guidelines are available at www.massillonrotary.org under the Rotary Foundation tab. The deadline to submit applications is April 15 and awards will be announced by June 15. For more information, contact MRFoundation10@gmail.com.
More than $121,000 raised for Malone, Walsh student athletes
NORTH CANTON – Each year, Walsh University and Malone University challenge each other on the basketball court for the Mayor’s Cup Challenge. To up the ante this year and raise funds, the universities added a friendly fundraising competition to “fill the cup” with donations and announce the winner at the annual Mayor’s Cup game between the longtime rivals, which was held Jan. 12. The university with the greatest number of donors making gifts of any size from Jan. 5-12 would win.
Walsh won both the men’s and women’s basketball games, and off court, Walsh edged ahead in the final hours of the #Fillthecup23 challenge with 80 donors, raising $63,192 to Malone’s $58,381 for athletic departments and teams. Walsh secured donations from 1,147 donors while Malone raised funds from 1,067 donors, according to a news release. Both schools posted several challenge gifts to match donations.
Stark State College named among top U.S. colleges, universities for online learning
JACKSON TWP. – Stark State College has been named among America’s Best Online Learning Schools for 2023, according to a news release.
The college’s online learning program, eStarkState, was ranked 72nd in Newsweek’s ranking of 200 outstanding online college and university programs, a list that includes prestigious two- and four-year schools across the nation. Stark State is ranked fourth among the 10 Ohio colleges and universities.
Newsweek and global data firm Statista worked together to find America's Top Online Colleges 2023, based on their own research and a survey of about 9,000 online learners.
The institutions received five stars if their aggregate score value is above the median score of all awarded institutions or four stars if their score is below. Stark State College received five stars.
