Stark County Dairy Promoters scholarships available

CANTON − Stark County Dairy Promoters scholarships are available to Stark County high school seniors. Stark County students already in college are eligible, and students who have won these scholarships in the past are eligible to apply again.

To be eligible to apply, students must:

  • Be a resident of Stark County;

  • Be pursuing a two- or four-year college level study, or graduate level study in the field of dairy science, large animal veterinary medicine, human nutrition or food science;

  • Have at least a 2.5 grade-point average in high school;

  • Have demonstrated financial need.

Summer camp set for girls interested in science

WOOSTER − The Buckeye Women in Science, Engineering and Research (B-WISER) summer camp, an educational partnership of the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and The College of Wooster, will take place June 18-23. This residential science camp at The College of Wooster invites girls completing seventh or eighth grade this year to apply. The application deadline is April 20.

B-WISER is designed to encourage a demographic that is underrepresented in science, engineering, and research. Campers will complete a daily curriculum with classes in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, robot construction, and engineering. Outside of classes, attendees will continue to participate in science-based activities.

The camp also hosts career presentations that feature women with careers in science, engineering and research. The teachers and counselors at B-WISER also have a special interest in promoting science among young women. The teachers are all women, and the counselors are all former B-WISER campers.

The cost to attend B-WISER is $600, with scholarships available for students eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches. Acceptance to the camp is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Camp Canopy is June 11-16; scholarships available

MASSILLON – Camp Canopy, open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors (up to age 19), will be June 11-16 at Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in Carrollton. Camp Canopy offers a mix of forestry, wildlife and adventure.

Stark Soil and Water Conservation District will offer camp scholarships to interested Stark County high school students. Applicants must be current Stark County residents. Scholarships will cover only the cost of camp, including meals and programs ($400 value). The scholarship winners will be responsible for their transportation to and from camp and for any spending money they wish to take to camp.

The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. April 20. Accepted applicants will be notified April 27. Stark SWCD will provide registration information for attendees that must be submitted directly to Camp Canopy. The attendees need only submit the registration and health forms.

Walsh University announces commencement speaker, honorary degrees

NORTH CANTON − His Grace, Archbishop Bashar Matti Warda, CSsR, of Erbil, Iraq, will deliver Walsh University’s 2023 Commencement Address during graduation exercises at 8:30 a.m. May 6 for graduates of the Byers School of Nursing and the DeVille School of Business, and at 2:45 p.m. for graduates of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education and School of Behavioral and Health Sciences, at the Cecchini Health and Wellness Complex, Alumni Arena. He also will concelebrate Baccalaureate Mass at 12:30 p.m.

During the commencement ceremonies, Walsh University will present Archbishop Warda with an Honorary Doctorate of Theology for his lifetime achievements. Archbishop Warda is a leading international voice for the persecuted Christians in Northern Iraq and Founder of a hospital, a non-governmental organization, four schools and builder of three churches.

Walsh University will also present an Honorary Doctorate of Business to Roger DeVille, a 1965 alumnus, president of DeVille Construction Company and DeVille Developments, philanthropist, community leader, namesake of the DeVille School of Business and longtime friend and benefactor of Walsh University. DeVille holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Walsh University and is on the Walsh University Board of Directors and DeVille School of Business Advisory Committee.
