Canton Audubon Society offers scholarship
CANTON – Canton Audubon Society is offering the $1,000 Arnold W. Fritz Memorial Scholarship, awarded annually to a college student who is majoring in any environmental science program.
To be eligible, a student must be a junior, senior or graduate student in college at the time of the award. The student may be a college sophomore at the time of the application. The scholarship is awarded for the year following application.
The student must be studying any environmental science discipline, or in law or business with the intent to pursue a career in the environmental field. In the latter case, the student must be able to prove an interest in the environment and a commitment to serving in this field.
This scholarship is offered to any student residing in or attending school in any county served by Canton Audubon Society or any contiguous county.
Application forms and guidelines are at www.cantonaudubon.org and must be mailed to Canton Audubon Society, P.O. Box 9586, Canton, OH 44711, to arrive by the March 1 deadline.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarships available
High school seniors impacted by Alzheimer’s disease can win up to $5,000 for college through the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Teen Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship. Students can enter the contest by visiting www.alzfdn.org/scholarship. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. March 1.
College-bound high school seniors are invited to apply for the scholarship by submitting an essay (1,500 words maximum) or submitting a video, no longer than four minutes, describing how Alzheimer’s disease has impacted their lives and what they have learned about themselves, their family or community through the experience. Essays can be submitted by visiting www.alzfdn.org/scholarship. Students already attending college are not eligible to participate.
The winner receives a $5,000 scholarship with additional prizes awarded for runners up and honorable mentions. Last year, AFA awarded $90,000 in scholarships to 117 high school students.
AFA has been able to provide these scholarship funds with the generous support of charitable donors.
HBCU/STEM Spring Break College Tour set for March
CANTON – The Eric Snow Family YMCA Minority Achievers program will take a four-state HBCU/STEM Spring Break College Tour to visit colleges and universities in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia from March 19-24.
The Marathon Petroleum Company awarded a grant to the YMCA of Central Stark County to provide a weeklong Spring Break College Tour for Stark County minority students interested in the STEM fields. The trip will include college tours and educational and enrichment activities with stops at the National Mall and other iconic monuments in Washington, D.C., such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
This is the third year that the YMCA has offered the tour. Last year’s tour included stops at Tennessee State University, Lance College, the University of Memphis, Alabama A & M, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina A & T State.
Twelve males and 12 females may participate in the tour. Cost is $150, which includes travel, food and lodging. A $50 deposit is due Feb. 17, with the balance due March 3. Michael T. Brown, director of community development at the YMCA of Central Stark County, and four other qualified, vetted adults will be chaperones.

Western Governors University offers scholarships for working adults
COLUMBUS – Western Governors University is offering $2,500 scholarships to help busy, working adults who want to upgrade their education, job skills and earning power.
The WGU New Year Scholarship may also be combined with the State of Ohio’s $2,500 Second Chance Grant, which is helping Ohioans restart their college careers by obtaining a degree or credential. Western Governors University was founded in 1997 by a coalition of 19 U.S. state governors as a way to offer their citizens – particularly adult learners – the chance to go to college from home, at their own pace, while holding jobs and caring for their families. In 2018, Ohio became the eighth additional state to partner with WGU, an accredited, nonprofit university, to offer its degree programs in health and nursing, business, teaching, and information technology.
