Puerto Rico’s celebration after its 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday to advance to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals was quickly subdued.

Edwin Diaz, one of the top closers in Major League Baseball who signed a five-year, $102 million deal with the New York Mets this offseason, sustained a right knee injury shortly after the Puerto Rican team stormed to the field after Diaz struck out Teoscar Hernandez to end the game.

Diaz left the loanDepot park field on a wheelchair. He raised his arm to acknowledge the crowd as he went down the tunnel toward the clubhouse, which received a rousing applause.

Kike Hernandez said the mood in the clubhouse afterward was “quiet.”

“It comes to a certain point,” Hernandez said, “where it’s bigger than the game. ... As excited as we were about the game, that’s one of our brothers. Some of us grew up together. It’s really easy to set aside the game and worry about us as humans. It definitely doesn’t feel like we just beat the Dominican Republic to advance.”

The severity of the injury is not yet known. Puerto Rico manager Yadier Molina said Diaz is undergoing tests.

Molina said he was celebrating with his coaching staff before realizing Diaz was injured.

“When we looked up,” Molina said, “Edwin was on the ground. ... It got me by surprise. It sucks. When you see a guy that works so hard like Edwin on the ground like that, it’s just sad.”

Diaz converted 32 of 35 save opportunities last season for the Mets.
