Effingham home severely damaged in fire Friday

Sep. 9—Firefighters responded to a fire Friday at a home at the corner of South 4th Street and Lawrence Avenue in Effingham. There were no injuries.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters began by using a water hose which they sprayed through the windows to extinguish the fire. Then they entered the house to extinguish the inside of the home as well.

First responders limited the spread of the fire to the first-floor kitchen area of the house, but the entire house experienced significant smoke and heat damage, officials said.

Firefighters remained at the scene for approximately two hours to ventilate and investigate the home.

The Effingham Fire Department arrived at the scene at approximately 11 a.m. Friday and were assisted by other agencies from the area. Assistance was provided by Effingham City Dispatch, Effingham Police Department, Rural Med, Teutopolis Fire Protection District, Shumway Fire Protection Department, Altamont Fire Protection Department, St. Elmo Fire Protection Department, Edgewood Fire protection Department, and Ameren Electric and Gas.

The cause of the fire is still unclear, but Effingham Fire Chief Brant Yochum said the cause is under investigation.
