Effort to arrest those engaging in online sex abuse of children nets 59 offenders

The Abilene Police Department on Tuesday reported that a monthlong effort called Operation Janus that involved several law enforcement agencies resulted in the rescue of 28 children from online sexual abuse.

More than 80 criminal charges were filed against 59 offenders who were apprehended during the operation, a press release stated.

Investigators seized terabytes of date and electronic devices used to commit these crimes. Examination of these items could lead to further arrests, the release stated.

"Operation Janus allowed us to collectively support each other by sharing resources and intelligence to catch predators in the act. It also allowed us to recover children and protect them from further harm,” said James J. Dwyer, FBI Dallas acting special agent in charge, said in the statement.

The effort involved federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Analysts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children assisted in the operation.
