New efforts to crack down on expired license plates in Jefferson County
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced new enforcement efforts on Friday to crack down on expired license plates.
Starting Friday through the rest of February, the sheriff’s office and other local law enforcement agencies within Jefferson County will be involved with expired license plate enforcement and amnesty event.
The participating agencies “will emphasize stopping vehicles with expired plates,” per the sheriff’s office.
“With the false narrative of over-policing and the nonsense of decriminalizing everything in the
rearview mirror, we know we must hold offenders accountable for compliance,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak. “It’s time for action.”

The efforts come in partnership with the Arnold, Pevely, Festus, Herculaneum, Crystal City, De Soto, Hillsboro, Eureka, and Byrnes Mill Police Departments, in addition to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
While stepping up enforcement around expired license plates, the sheriff’s office says the month of February also comes with a chance for amnesty. Some drivers may be eligible for a nearly 60% discount off of fines and costs of an expired license plate citation.

Nearby in St. Louis County, some council members are pushing for more citations on expired temp tags.
The Missouri Department of Revenue is also working to implement an integrated system that dealers can use to track titles, registration, and sales tax, but one St. Louis County councilman says it’s still around two years away from being fully operational.
