‘Egg-flation?’: Egg prices skyrocket over impact of bird flu cases and inflation, experts say

Some have been calling it “egg-flation.”

The price of eggs is soaring, and the increase is impacting shoppers’ wallets and leaving shelves empty.

The average price per dozen is now at $4.33, compared to last year’s $1.33.

One big issue has been cases of avian flu, or bird flu.

Data shows bird flu cases and prevention efforts has led to the deaths of 60 million birds over the last year.

Farmers are also struggling with high prices for transportation, feed and energy.

“18 eggs a day when we were getting 15 to 18 dozen this time last year,” said Chelsea Carrigan, owner of Red Barn Farm.

Experts say it will probably be several months before production to able to get back to normal.

They recommend avoiding shopping on Sunday night or Monday morning since most stores restock overnight during the week.
