Egg Harbor pair injured in crash that killed Ephraim man

TOWN OF SEVASTOPOL - Two people from Egg Harbor were injured in a crash Wednesday that killed an Ephraim man, the Door County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.

Tracy C. Ahola, 60, and Kimberly J. Ahola, 53, were struck by an SUV driven by Richard F. Staubel, 78, who lives in both Ephraim and Cape Coral, Florida.

Authorities said the SUV was traveling north on State 42 near the entrance to the Peninsular Agricultural Research Station at about 2:40 p.m. when it crossed the centerline of the highway. The vehicle struck the rear tires of the trailer of a southbound semi-truck, then struck the Ahola's SUV, which had pulled onto the shoulder of the highway in an attempt to avoid a collision.

Staubel was pronounced dead at the scene, while Tracy Ahola was airlifted to a Green Bay hospital for treatment of his injuries while Kimberly Ahola was treated at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay. No updated information about the Aholas' conditions were provided.

Chief Deputy Patrick McCarthy said the incident remains under investigation.
