🌱 Egg Heaven On Ximeno Closes + What’s Open/Closed On MLK Day?

Happy Saturday, Long Beach, and happy National Strawberry Ice Cream Day! Here's everything going on in town today.

A five-decade favorite is closing down. Also, will there be trash pickup on Monday? Finally, the LBPD arrested two murder suspects!

First, today's weather:

A couple of afternoon showers. High: 68 Low: 52.

Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:

  1. Egg Heaven at the corner of Ximeno and 4th Street is closing indefinitely on Sunday. There’s no telling if or when it will reopen. After 50 years at the location, the owner says the business needs to "wait until the economy picks up and is more conducive to small businesses." (LBize)

  2. There will be several closures in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday. Only two City-operated COVID-19 testing sites will be open: the Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park and the setup in the former Boeing parking lot on Wardlow Road. There will be no street sweeping. However, there will be trash pickups. (Patch)

  3. The LBPD arrested two suspects in the January 2 stabbing murder of a man near the 700 block of Lime Avenue. Officials announced Friday that they arrested a 29-year-old and a 23-year-old man. “Detectives believe the victim and suspects were known to each other and were involved in a verbal dispute which escalated into a fight.” (LBPD)

  4. The City has received grant money from the California Department of Cannabis Control. It intends to use the funds to speed up approval of cannabis-related business licenses. “Long Beach is set to get $3.9 million to hire consultants and staff who can process applications, handle permits and perform inspections.” As of Thursday, there were 498 pending applications. Another chunk of the money will go to what the City terms “equity applicants,” “who are those with lower net wealth, who live in underserved parts of the community or who have prior criminal cannabis convictions.” (LB Post)

  5. The cheapest home on the LB market, as of Friday, is the house on West 33rd Street, which is listed at $399,000. It has 816 square feet and lots of potential. If you don’t mind going down to 548 square feet but spending $499,000, you can live a little closer to the beach on East 11th Street. (LB Post)
