Egypt: 7 arrested for sexual assault in Tahrir

Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian security officials say police have arrested seven men for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old student during celebrations marking the inauguration of a new president.

Video footage posted on social media shows the student completely naked with parts of her body bloodied as policemen struggle to escort her out of Cairo's Tahrir square, where tens of thousands celebrated Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's inauguration until late Sunday.

Another video clip that has triggered a storm of anger shows a TV reporter telling her anchorwoman in the studio that there were several cases of sexual harassment in Tahrir during the celebrations.

With a laugh, the anchorwoman said: "Because they are happy."

Sexual harassment is one of Egypt's enduring social ills, prompting the government to issue a law last week that criminalizes it.
