Eiffel Tower Goes Dark to Honor Ex-President Jacques Chirac

The Eiffel Tower went dark on the evening of September 26, in memory of former French president Jacques Chirac, who died on that day, aged 86.

The company operating the Paris landmark said it would close at 9:00 pm instead of the usual time of 11:45 pm.

Chirac loomed large in French politics for decades, holding the presidency for 12 years between 1995 and 2007, and, prior to that, serving as the prime minister from 1974 to 1976 and from 1986 to 1988.

Chirac was also the mayor of Paris, from 1977 to 1995. Credit: La Tour Eiffel via Storyful
