Eight El Paso high school soccer teams to play in regional quarterfinals

Eight El Paso high school soccer teams remain in the UIL playoffs and will play Friday and Saturday in the regional quarterfinals. There are five boys teams and three girls teams and there will be two regional quarterfinals this weekend in El Paso.

Del Valle vs. Andress girls

Del Valle defeated Canutillo and Lubbock Monterey to reach the regional quarterfinals and Andress defeated Ysleta and Abilene Wylie to set the in-town matchup. Del Valle and Andress will play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastwood High School to determine who advances to the regional tournament.

Ironically, Del Valle and Andress won their area round matches by identical 5-4 scores.

Del Valle has been led this season by Natalia Garcia and Mia Serrano, who were both key in the area round win against Lubbock Monterey. Andress will counter with goal scorers Bella Morgas and Milenna Griego.

Earlier this season, Andress defeated Del Valle, 7-3.

Riverside vs. San Elizario boys

The Eagles and Rangers play at 6 p.m. Friday at Del Valle High School and the two teams are no strangers to each other as both compete in District 1-4A.

San Elizario defeated Riverside, 3-2 and 1-0 in the regular season on its way to the district title. The Eagles reached the regional quarterfinals with wins against Midland Greenwood and Borger.

Riverside was the No. 4 team out of the district but has defeated District 2-4A champ San Angelo Lake View and Burkburnett. Isaac Santoyo has scored six goals to lead Riverside it the playoffs and San Elizario will be looking for win No. 22 on the season.

Other teams to watch

  • In Class 4A, the Irvin boys have been impressive with wins against Andrews and Pampa. Omar Escobedo came up big for the Rockets in the area round win with two goals.

  • In Class 5A, Bel Air aims to keep its unbeaten record alive when it takes on Abilene High. The Highlanders have defeated Chapin and Amarillo Caprock by a combined 8-1 in two playoff games. The Highlanders won the 2019 state championship.

  • Eastlake is coming off a win against Southlake Carroll in the area round and it looks to return to the regional tournament for third straight year in Class 6A. Two years ago, Eastlake played for the regional title and last year lost in the regional semis.

  • The San Elizario girls have been steady all season with wins against Midland Greenwood and Burkburnett in the playoffs and an overall mark of 24-4.
