Coffee Grinder, Newport
This small coffee shop inside Perry Mill, former on Bannister's Wharf, has been an iconic feature of Newport’s downtown since it opened in 1997. Owner Alyssa Galdchun has been serving Italian espresso drinks and baked goods by herself and she sources her house blend roast coffee beans from a small-batch roaster in Central Massachusetts.
Empire Tea & Coffee, Newport
Another popular destination for tourists and locals alike, Empire Tea & Coffee has several locations throughout downtown Newport. Additionally, customers can also order coffee, tea and pastries through their mobile app for pickup at one of their locations.
Mokka Coffeehouse, Newport
Tucked away on Thames Street’s Spring Wharf, Mokka is an old-world-style coffeehouse that serves Fair Trade coffee and baked goods. Beyond standard espresso drinks, the shop also serves a special Lebanese Lemonade.
Simple Merchant Coffee, Newport
Simple Merchant began serving artisan coffee on a tricycle cart around Newport before moving into the renovated Sheffield School building, now Innovate Newport, last year. The shop specializes in serving blends from different roasters.

Like Simple Merchant, The Nitro Bar also began as a coffee cart. Now with two locations in Newport, the Nitro Bar’s shops serve cold brew coffee on tap and a full menu of savory and sweet treats. The Nitro Bar’s cold brew is also available on tap at coffee shops around Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Custom Coffee House, Middletown
Veteran-owned Custom Coffee House prides itself on roasting its own small batch coffee and providing them wholesale to local hotels, markets, restaurants and other businesses. Its brand, Veteran Coffee Roasters, donates $1 per pound of wholesale beans sold to benefit veteran organizations.

The original Kaffeology is on Thames Street in Newport and the coffee shop opened its Portsmouth location last year. While the cafe is famous for its massive gourmet milkshakes, topped with everything from smores to Poptarts to cupcakes, the shop also features a unique line of coffee drinks like the Queen Bee, espresso whisked with clover honey and topped with milk and bee pollen.
Coastal Roasters, Tiverton
Coastal Roasters is a micro-roaster with a full-service cafe operating out of a small waterfront space in Tiverton. The shop offers specialty whole or ground coffee beans from sources around the globe and sells its beans in a few local grocery stores.
