LAKETOWN TWP. — A student group at Saugatuck High School spent time last week planting trees in a local park.

Students from SHS’ Interact Club planted eight trees at Laketown Township’s Shore Acres Park last Tuesday, Nov. 22. The group planted a mix of maples and oaks at the 40-acre park, which includes a disc golf course and walking trails to Saugatuck Dunes State Park — and is located next to Felt Mansion.

“We all love the state park as well as Shore Acres Township Park, and we thought that some native shade trees would make a nice addition out there,” said Mike Shaw, club advisor and teacher at SHS, in a statement. “They’ll add to the beauty out there, enhance the parking lot area and offer more shade for people in the summer.”

About two dozen students were involved in the tree planting. Eric Morrow of Great Lakes Ornamentals LLC in Fennville volunteered to haul the trees to the park and showed students how to plant them. Ron and Sandy Collins paid for the trees.
