El Paso amateur boxer Kayla Gomez wins Texas Golden Gloves title

El Paso amateur boxing standout Kayla Gomez won a Texas Golden Gloves state championship on Saturday night in Fort Worth.

Gomez, who is a 2024 Olympic hopeful and who has won multiple national and international competitions, defeated Alicia Contreras from San Antonio by stoppage in the 119-pound division.

With the win, Gomez qualifies for the National Golden Gloves, May 6-14 in Chester, Pennsylvania.

El Paso's Nayeli Rodriguez finished second at the state tournament, losing a split decision to Houston's Jocelyn Perez. The fight was contested at 125 pounds.

El Paso's Ivy Enriquez selected for Team USA

Ivy Enriquez, who is one of the top youth boxers in the United States, has been selected to represent Team USA in various competitions.

She will travel to Paris later this year with the team but the dates have not been announced.
