El Paso law enforcement boxing event to help 8-year-old boy mauled in dog attack

An annual El Paso law enforcement amateur boxing tourney on Friday will raise funds to help an 8-year-old boy disfigured when he was attacked by three pit bulls earlier this year, officials said.

The 11th Annual Clash of the Titans features fighters from city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights starts at 7 p.m. Friday at the El Paso County Coliseum, 4100 E. Paisano Drive.

The boy and his little brother were waiting for a school bus on the morning of April 18 when the boy was attacked by three dogs on Colonia Tierra Road in the Las Colonias area of eastern El Paso County, sheriff's officials said.

The boy's right ear and lip were torn off and he suffered lost and broken teeth, then was in a hospital for weeks, sheriff's officials said in a statement.

The Sheriff's Office said that the dogs were seized by animal welfare officers. The dogs' owner, Jose Lopez, 29, was arrested on a drug possession charge and a felony charge of attack by a dog resulting in serious bodily injury. The case is set for trial in January.

The Sheriff's Office has offered counseling to the boys, who are having a hard time dealing with the attack, officials said. The injured boy also is having difficulty because he is being bullied at school due to his injuries.

The boxing showcase's proceeds will help support the child's upcoming surgeries. The event is hosted by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the El Paso County Sheriff's Foundation, with the law firm of Glasheen, Valles, & Inderman as the title sponsor.
