El Paso non-binary student dies after school bathroom altercation in Oklahoma

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 16-year-old non-binary student from El Paso, died following a “brutal bathroom altercation” in Oklahoma, according to Borderland Rainbow Center, a LGBTQ non-profit organization in El Paso.

The non-profit says Nex Benedict, 16, died from their injuries resulting from the altercation at Owasso High School located in Owasso, Oklahoma.

“As a community, we are deeply saddened by this loss. Questions arose as the school faced criticism for failing to call first responders or notify police,” the non-profit said.

Benedict’s obituary says they died on Thursday, Feb. 8 and was born in El Paso.

Benedict leaves behind their parents, four sisters, two brothers, a nephew and niece, according to their obituary.
