A Mexico-born grilled chicken chain is heading to Northern Colorado.

El Pollo Loco has set its sights on Larimer, Boulder, Broomfield and Weld counties, with plans to open restaurants there by the end of next year. The chain has not yet provided specific locations for upcoming stores or the order in which they are planned to open.

The expansion is part of a trio of development agreements that also cover New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, according to a news release from the restaurant. The new Northern Colorado restaurants will join El Pollo Loco's first Colorado location, which opened in Denver late last year.

El Pollo Loco, known for its fire-grilled chicken meals, started in Mexico in the 1970s before expanding into the U.S. and settling in California in 1980.
