Elderly Filipino Woman Punched in Unprovoked Attack on San Diego Trolley

An elderly Filipino woman was assaulted in an unprovoked attack on a San Diego trolley. The suspect, an unidentified man, allegedly punched the woman for no apparent reason, according to ABC 10News. Nearby witnesses helped the woman report the incident to the police. She was treated at a local hospital. No arrest has been reported. JoAnn Fields, a community advocate and director of the Filipino Resource Center, told ABC 10News that she was upset about the incident. “My first reaction is angry and then I was just sad for her,” Fields said. The attack is the latest in a recent crime wave targeting elderly Asian Americans. Out of more than 2,800 accounts of anti-Asian hate reported nationally between March 19 and Dec. 31 last year, 7.3% involved Asian Americans aged 60 and above, according to Stop AAPI Hate. NextShark previously reported a recent surge in attacks, including the death of 84-year-old Vicha Ratanakpakdee and the assault of a 70-year-old grandmother in Oakland. Do you have a hate incident to report? Help us document the recent rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans by going to STOP AAPI HATE to report an incident. Please stay safe out there.
