For the next year, elderly Singaporeans will be able to get a hot mug of coffee or tea at $0.50 per cuppa, available at more than 90 NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam coffee shops and food courts across the island. Members of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) can enjoy the daily discounts in May, and subsequently every Wednesday from June this year till the end of June in 2020.
As for the rest of the Pioneer and Merdeka Generations, they’ll receive the year-long savings for each cup starting from July onwards. For reference, a regular kopi costs about $1.60 on average.
To get the discount, customers will have to show their NTUC Union member, Merdeka, or Pioneer Generation cards. Each card can redeem one beverage, but there’s no limit on the number of cups that can be consumed in a day. Patrons will just have to get in line again to order each subsequent cup.
NTUC said today that more than 1.7 million people stand to benefit from this initiative, which was revealed as part of the union’s May Day message yesterday. This comes on the heels of FairPrice’s measures to help relieve workers’ worries about the cost of living.
From June, affordable breakfasts sets consisting of a drink, toast, and two soft boiled eggs will be on sale at 52 outlets, costing $1.80 for NTUC union members and $2.20 for the public. There are also plans to have 10 more Rice Garden outlets, at least one in every densely populated residential area, to served mixed rice dishes starting at $1.50 for ComCare and NTUC Foodfare Privilege cardholders.
NTUC FairPrice is also giving a three percent Merdeka Generation discount every Wednesday and a three percent discount every Monday and Thursday for the Pioneer Generation from this July to next June.
