A public inquiry into Britain's response to and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic got underway on Tuesday, with a promise it would get to the truth, and expose any wrongdoing or culpable conduct. Britain has recorded almost 20 million COVID infections and more than 166,000 deaths - the seventh highest fatality total globally - and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his ministers have faced criticism for their handling of the crisis. Last year, Johnson ordered the inquiry to look into the preparedness of the country as well as the public health and economic response.
KHARTOUM (Reuters) -Sudanese pro-democracy groups will ask the country's United Nations mission to help them integrate a paramilitary force and former rebel factions into a unified army, or disarm and demobilise them, according to a draft letter seen by Reuters. The letter, drafted by the Confederation of Sudanese Civil Society Organizations, is backed by the main political groups sidelined in an October 2021 coup that ended a power-sharing arrangement between civilians and the military, its authors said. The appeal, which supporters said would be sent in the coming days to the UN Special Representative in Sudan, Volker Perthes, focuses on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and former rebel groups that established a presence in the capital, Khartoum, after signing a peace deal in 2020.
The new guidelines will take effect on Nov. 1 and will apply to offices in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, according to the memo. AmEx's decision reflects a growing desire among companies to seek a return to normalcy as the pandemic recedes. Last month, Goldman Sachs Group Inc also removed vaccine requirements for most of its U.S. offices.
