Election 2022: What to know about voting in Chemung, Steuben and Tioga counties

The next big national, state and local elections are coming up Nov. 8.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate are on ballots across the nation, and many state Senate and Assembly and local races will be contested.

Information on federal and statewide elections and statewide ballot propositions is available on the state Board of Elections website.

Here's what Southern Tier voters need to know before voting this fall.

When is the 2022 election?

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. that day.

Can I vote early?

Early voting will take place between Oct. 29 and Nov. 6 at various polling locations.

How do I vote by absentee ballot?

Anyone who will be absent from their county on Election Day, or is unable to appear at the polls due to temporary or permanent illness or disability, or due to other legitimate reasons, can vote by absentee ballot.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the county board of elections by Oct. 24.

Who is on the ballot?

In Chemung County, there are contested races for Chemung County Legislature seats and a few town council races.

In Steuben County, there is a contested race for a council seat on the Corning City Council, and a few other municipal council races.

Steuben voters will also see a key countywide proposition. If approved, the measure will maintain legislative representation on the county board at 17 members, but reduce the number of districts from 13 to 11.

There are no contested countywide races in Tioga County, but a handful of town council and justice races will be decided.
