With 100% of Franklin County precincts reporting, Democrats appear to be taking a majority of the county's Ohio House seats and one race in a virtual tie, according to final, unofficial election results.

There were eight contested races in these midterms. Four races had Democrats running unopposed: Dontavius Jarrells in District 1, Latyna M. Humphrey in District 2, Allison Russo in District 7 and Munira Yasin Abdullahi in District 9.

Here are the candidates ahead in Franklin County's seats in the Ohio House of Representatives, according to final unofficial poll results, which elections officials will certify in the coming days:

District 3: Democrat Ismail Mohamed comfortably ahead of Republican J. Josiah Lanning

This district includes the Arena District, the Short North, parts of the University District, North Linden, parts of Old North Columbus, parts of the Northeast Side and Easton.

Ismail Mohamed, one of the city's first Somali-born attorneys licensed to practice in the state, is ahead of his opponent, Republican J. Josiah Lanning, 80% to 20% of the vote.

Mohamed joins fellow Democrat Munira Yasin Abdullahi, who ran unopposed for the 9th House District seat, as one of Ohio's first Somalian House representatives.

District 4: Democrat Mary Lightbody beats Republican Jill Rudler

Lightbody flipped her previous House seat in 2018 and was reelected in 2020. This will be her third term.

District 5: Republican Ronald Beach IV and Democrat Richard Brown vitually tied

Beach had the narrowest of leads over Brown with all precincts counted, a total of 112 votes between them late Tuesday night. That gap had narrowed by Monday morning with just 96 votes separating the two.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, if the number of votes cast in any district election for the declared winning candidate does not exceed the number of votes cast for the declared defeated candidate by a margin of one-half of 1% or more of the total vote, the Secretary of State orders a recount.
