Election 2023: Broome voters decide district attorney, Vestal supervisor, Endicott mayor

Broome County voters cast their ballots for a variety of local government positions this Election Day.

Some of the top races include Broome County District Attorney, Vestal Town Supervisor and Village of Endicott Mayor.

Who won the Broome County District Attorney race?

Defense attorney Paul Battisti beat out former Binghamton mayor Matt Ryan to become the next Broome County District Attorney on Tuesday.

Battisti ran on a tough-on-crime platform with the backing of various law enforcement groups, and centered his campaign around public safety.

In a statement posted on Facebook late Tuesday, Battisti thanked his supporters and addressed some of his main goals for the position.

"As District Attorney, I will work hard every day to help make Broome County’s families safer by reducing violent crime, and helping those suffering from mental health and substance misuse," said Battisti. "We will work with law enforcement and community partners to prevent crime and use innovative tools to help reduce recidivism."

Ryan, who served as Binghamton's mayor from 2006-2013, ran on a platform centered around a proactive approach to the criminal justice system. Ryan's proposed policies revolve around helping reduce crime by stopping it from happening in the first place, through the implementation of community outreach initiatives.

In a Facebook post late Tuesday Ryan said, "We ran a great campaign and said what needed to be said: tough on crime isn’t working and cracking down harder isn’t a plan for justice."

"I give all my appreciation first and foremost to my family for their sacrifice and support during this campaign," Battisti's statement read. "It hasn’t been easy, but they’ve been my rock. Thank you also goes out to my entire campaign team, volunteers, supporters and everyone in-between who helped make this possible.”

Who won the Vestal Town Supervisor race?

Democrat Maria Sexton secured her role as the next Vestal Town Supervisor over incumbent John Schaffer, who ran on the Conservative party line, and Republican Ted Wolf.

Sexton, who defeated Schaffer in the Democratic primary earlier this year, ran on a platform based on improving local government. Sexton ran under the Real Democracy 4 Vestal banner alongside Vestal City Council candidates Glenn Miller and Robert Greene, who beat out Republican Patrick McPherson in unofficial results totals for the two open council member seats.

"I want to thank all the people of Vestal who used their voice and voted for change," said Sexton. "Glenn, Robert and I are looking forward to making things better for all the people of Vestal, completely transparently, with all residents having a real say in how we move forward as a community."

Sexton proposed the use of technology including video recordings of town board meetings and an electronic survey system to increase transparency and public involvement in politics. Sexton previously served as a NYPD police officer for 20 years, and a high school history teacher for nine.

Who won the Endicott Mayor race?

On Tuesday night, former deputy mayor Nick Burlingame surpassed incumbent Linda Jackson and board member Larry Coppola to become Endicott's newest mayor.

In a statement sent over email, Burlingame thanked his family, supporters and the entire Endicott community.

"Starting tomorrow, we roll up our sleeves, ready to put our shared goals into action," said Burlingame. "Let us unite and harness the strength of our community to build bridges and tear down walls. By fostering a culture of teamwork and collaboration, we will build a foundation for sustainable growth, innovation, and prosperity."

Burlingame, who served as deputy mayor in 2022, is a trustee on the village board. Burlingame cited public safety and village water quality as two of the biggest issues facing Endicott.

"To the entire community of Endicott, thank you for embracing my vision, for believing in a united future, and for placing your confidence in me," said Burlingame. "This victory is not simply about winning an election; it is about the collective desire for positive change and the belief that we can create a brighter tomorrow together."
