Election 2023: Who’s running for borough council, township boards in Centre County?

Borough council and township supervisors seats are up for election throughout Centre County this November, and candidates filed their paperwork to run.

Across the county, there are 40 borough council seats and 75 seats on township supervisor boards that will be up for election. This list shows who will appear on the ballot for each, according to information provided by the Centre County elections office. The primary election is May 16 and municipal election is Nov. 7.

Borough Councils

Bellefonte Borough

  • Bellefonte’s 1st Ward will have one four-year seat, currently held by Democrat Douglas Johnson, up for election. Johnson will appear on the ballot.

  • Bellefonte’s 2nd Ward will have two four-year seats, currently held by Republican Randall Brachbill and Democrat Deborah Cleeton, up for election. Cleeton will appear on the ballot.

  • Bellefonte’s 3rd Ward will have one four-year seat, currently held by Democrat Joanne Tosti-Vasey, up for election. Tosti-Vasey will appear on the ballot, as will Republican Christopher Morelli.

Centre Hall Borough

The Centre Hall Borough Council will have four, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Republicans Patricia Krisch and Davis Araujo, and Democrats Christine Cooper and Patrick Kelly.

Incumbents Kelly, Cooper and Araujo will appear on the ballot, as well as Democrat Matt Powell and Republican LuAnn Yearick.

Howard Borough

The Howard Borough Council will have three four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Democrats Andrew Kotzur and Diana Goodyear, and Republican Donna Benner. The council will also have a two-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Bobby Yearick, who was appointed to fill a vacancy.

Kotzur, Yearick and Benner will all appear on the ballot.

Milesburg Borough

The Milesburg Borough Council will have four, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Republicans Ethel Kellerman, Greg Ritter and George Holt, and Charles Weidow, who doesn’t have a party affiliation listed.

Ritter and Kellerman will appear on the ballots, as well as Democrat Samantha Walker.

Millheim Borough

The Millheim Borough Council will have three, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Democrats Robert Zeigler and Katie Blume, and Beth Cowher, who cross-filed. Zeigler announced he is seeking election as Centre County’s recorder of deeds.

Blume and Zeigler will both appear on the ballot, as well as Democrat Beth Cottrell.

Philipsburg Borough

The Philipsburg Borough Council will have three, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Democrats Kathy Kalinosky and Sam Womer, and Republican Michael Foreman.

The three incumbents will appear on the ballot.

Port Matilda Borough

The Port Matilda Borough Council will have four, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Republicans Bernard Kalt, Mark Lively Jr., Sandra Neal and William Hamer. The council will also have a two-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Joseph Bloom, who was appointed to fill a vacancy.

Incumbents Kalt, Lively, Neal, Hamer and Bloom will appear on the ballot, as well as Republicans Carolyn Kibe, David Lykens and Jonathan Rockey.

Snow Shoe Borough

The Snow Shoe Borough Council will have four, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Republicans Rick Retorick, Sandra Reiter and Craig Livergood. One seat is vacant.

Reiter will appear on the ballot.

State College Borough

The State College Borough Council will have four, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Janet Engeman and Peter Marshall, who cross-filed as Republican and Democrat, and Democrats Jesse Barlow and Deanna Behring. The council will also have a two-year seat up for election, currently held by Democrat Nalini Krishnankutty, who was appointed to fill a vacancy.

Kevin Kassab, Matt Herndon, Evan Myers, Josh Portney and Tony Sapia — all Democrats — will appear on the ballot, as well as Krishnankutty, who is running to retain her seat with a two-year term.

Unionville Borough

The Unionville Borough Council will have five, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Republicans Brian McAfee and Jason Crestani, Alisha Barton and Fred Ream Jr., who cross-filed as Republican and Democrat, and Democrat Benjamin Narehood.

Narehood, Barton and Republican Scott Dubbs will appear on the ballot.

Township supervisors

Benner Township

The Benner Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Thomas Moyer.

Moyer will appear on the ballot, as well as Republican Kathy Evey and Democrat David Thomas Roberts.

Boggs Township

The Boggs Township board of supervisors will have one 6-year seat up for election, currently held by Glenn Coakley, who cross-filed as Republican and Democrat.

Republican Scott P. Bennett will appear on the ballot.

Burnside Township

The Burnside Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Democrat Brett Umbenhouer.

No one will appear on the ballot.

College Township

The College Township Council will have three, four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Democrat Carla Stilson and Susan Trainor (who was appointed to fill a vacancy), and Republican D. Richard Francke.

Trainor and Francke will appear on the ballot, as well as Democrat Tracey Mariner.

Curtin Township

The Curtin Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election. The seat is currently held by Democrat Rick Miller.

Miller will appear on the ballot.

Ferguson Township

The Ferguson Township board of supervisors will have three four-year seats up for election. The seats are currently held by Democrats Laura Dininni (Ward 1), Jeremie Thompson (Ward 2) and Patty Stephens (Ward 3). The board will also have a two-year, at-large seat up for election, currently held by Democrat Corey Gracie-Griffin, who was appointed to fill a vacancy.

Democrat Omari Patterson will appear on the ballot for the two-year, at-large seat.

Democrat Matthew Heller and Republican Kenneth Raney will appear on the ballot for the four-year, Ward 1 seat.

Thompson will appear on the ballot for the four-year, Ward 2 seat.

Stephens will appear on the ballot for the four-year, Ward 3 seat.

Gregg Township

The Gregg Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election. The seat is currently held by Republican Ben Haupt.

Republicans Vicky Vanada and Herb Grove will appear on the ballot.

Haines Township

The Haines Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat, currently held by Republican Delmer Homan, and one two-year seat, currently held by Republican Randy Ream, up for election.

Homan will appear on the ballot for the six-year seat and Ream will appear on the ballot for the two-year seat, as will Republican Derek G. Hart.

Halfmoon Township

The Halfmoon Township board of supervisors will have two six-year seats up for election, currently held by Republicans Rose Ann Hoover and Patricia Hartle.

Hartle and Hoover will appear on the ballot, as well Democrat Tammy Perkins and Republican Steven Schellberg.

Harris Township

The Harris Township board of supervisors will have two six-year seats up for election, currently held by Republican Charles “Bud” Graham and Democrat Nigel Wilson.

Graham and Wilson will appear on the ballot, as will Democrat Tracey Moriarty.

Howard Township

The Howard Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Tyler Penland.

Penland will appear on the ballot, as will Republican Charles W. Comly II.

Huston Township

The Huston Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican James Cowan.

Republican Greg Sampsell will appear on the ballot.

Liberty Township

Running for a two-year interim seat, Republicans Gary L. Bathurst Sr., Mike Rupert and Guy Poorman will appear on the ballot. On the ballot for a six-year seat will be Republicans Stanley Donahay Jr., Rupert and Robert McGhee.

Marion Township

The Marion Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Herbert Chapman.

Chapman will appear on the ballot.

Miles Township

The Miles Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Eric Miller.

Miller will appear on the ballot.

Patton Township

The Patton Township board of supervisors will have two 6-year seats up for election, currently held by Democrats Betsy Whitman and Dan Trevino.

Whitman and Democrat Susan M. Chyczewski will appear on the ballot.

Penn Township

The Penn Township board of supervisors will have two six-year seats up for election, currently held by Republicans David Braucht and Donna Martin.

Braucht will appear on the ballot.

Potter Township

The Potter Township board of supervisors will have two 6-year seats up for election, currently held by Democrat Melvin Dutrow and Republican Dennis Foust.

Dutrow and Foust will appear on the ballot, as will Republicans Scott Floray, Paul E. Zerby and Ryan Newman.

Rush Township

The Rush Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Democrat David Jackson.

Jackson will appear on the ballot, as will Republican David Greenwald.

Snow Shoe Township

The Snow Shoe Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Democrat Rodney Preslovich.

Preslovich will appear on the ballot.

Spring Township

The Spring Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Democrat Terry Perryman.

Perryman will appear on the ballot, as well as Republican Matthew Deibler.

Taylor Township

The Taylor Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Christopher Shuey.

Republican Luke Moore will will appear on the ballot.

Union Township

The Union Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Brian Stauffer.

No one will appear on the ballot.

Walker Township

The Walker Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Deb Zimmerman, who cross-filed as Republican and Democrat.

Republican Zane Sherman will appear on the ballot.

Worth Township

The Worth Township board of supervisors will have one six-year seat up for election, currently held by Republican Chad Smith.

Republican Robert J. Peters Jr. will appear on the ballot.
