It's Election Day, Brockton: Here's everything you need to know

BROCKTON — Tuesday is Election Day in Brockton, as residents choose a mayor, at least two new city councilors and a minimum of two new school committee members. The city election comes amid an overspending scandal at Brockton Public Schools.

Polls are open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can see a sample ballot before heading to the polls.

You can find your polling location on the state's Elections Division website.

Mayor: Sullivan v. Fontaine

Brockton Mayor Robert F. Sullivan is running for a third term, arguing he's a steady hand who navigated the city through crises including COVID and the closing of Brockton Hospital. Opposing him is businessman Fred Fontaine, who is staking his mayoral run on the argument that he's the natural successor to Bill Carpenter.

City council at-large

The city council has four members who represent the entire city instead of a single ward. At least one new at-large councilor is guaranteed. That's because City Councilor Rita Mendes did not run for reelection so she can focus on her role as state representative for the all-Brockton 11th Plymouth District. You may vote for up to four of the following candidates, listed here in order of number of votes they received in the Sept. 19 preliminary election:

  • Jean Bradley Derenoncourt, 2,156

  • Winthrop H. Farwell (incumbent), 2,021

  • Moises M. Rodrigues (incumbent), 1,974

  • David C. Teixeira (incumbent) 1,652

  • Stephan A. Hooke Jr., 1,336

  • Jamal Brathwaite, 1,012

  • Cynthia D. McCall-Hodges, 965

  • Alix Arthur Gayaud, 466

City council wards

There's competition for each of the city's seven wards except Ward 2, where incumbent Maria Tavares faces no opposition.

  • City Council Ward 1: Incumbent Thomas J. Minichiello Jr. vs. Marlon D. Greene

  • City Council Ward 3 [Open]: Gary P. Keith vs. Philip Griffin

  • City Council Ward 4: Incumbent Susan Nicastro vs. Tony Branch

  • City Council Ward 5: Incumbent Jeffrey A. Thompson vs. Elisangela V. Teixeira

  • City Council Ward 6: Incumbent Jack Lally vs. Joseph Walker IV

  • City Council Ward 7: Incumbent Shirley R. Asack vs. Patrick Paul Quinn

School committee

Incumbents for the board that oversees Brockton Public Schools face no opposition in Wards 1, 4 and 6. Voters have the following choices in the competitive races:

  • School committee Ward 2: [Open] Jamie Hodges vs. Claudio E. Depina Gomes

  • School committee Ward 3 [Open]: Matthew Stanton vs. Ana C. Oliver

  • School committee Ward 5: Incumbent Judy A. Sullivan vs. Cynthia Rivas Mendes, formerly of Ward 2.
