Election Day guide: Here are a few key dates for the November midterms in California

In just a few days, California Secretary of State will begin to mail out the official voter information guide, which marks the count down to midterm Election Day.

This election, voters will decide on crucial local and state ballot measures, as well as governor.

Here's are a few key dates and a quick look at what's on the November ballot.

Key dates

  • Sept. 29 - Oct. 18: Secretary of State's office will mail the Official Voter Information Guide.

  • Oct. 5: Visalia City Council Online Candidate Forum will be livestreamed from 7 to 9 p.m.

  • Oct. 10: County elections officials will begin mailing each registered voter a vote-by-mail ballot.

  • Oct. 10: Early voting sites are open.

  • Oct. 10: All counties must open ballot drop-off locations for vote-by-mail ballots.

  • Oct. 11: "What's on Your Ballot?: Navigating the Propositions" forum from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Visalia's 210, a cafe downtown.

  • Oct. 24: Last day to register to vote for the general election. To check voter registration status visit MyVoterStatus.

  • Oct. 25 - Nov. 8: Voters can "conditionally" register and vote a provisional ballot during this time.

  • Nov. 8: Election Day. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Nov. 15: Vote by mail ballot deadline to be delivered by the United States Postal Service as long as the vote-by-mail ballot is postmarked on or before Election Day.

  • Dec. 8: Last day for county elections officials to certify election results.

  • Dec. 16: Statement of Vote is the final official election results certified by the Secretary of State and posted on the website.

  • Statewide candidates for U.S. Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General, Insurance Commissioner, Member of State Board of Equalization, State Superintendent of Public Instruction

  • U.S. Representative in Congress, State Senator, State Assembly Member

  • Supreme Court Justices

  • Local candidates and local measures

You can register to vote or update your registration online at registertovote.ca.gov. If you would like to fill out a physical form, voter registration applications can be found at post offices and libraries.
