Hedlund defeats Cowen to win reelection in Weymouth. Coughlin joins town council

WEYMOUTH − For a second time, Weymouth Mayor Robert Hedlund bested challenger Ed Cowen in Tuesday’s election.

Hedlund, who will go on to serve a third four-year term, won 75% of the 6,784 votes cast in the race.

Cowen, a Marine Corps veteran who first ran against Hedlund in 2019, received 18% of the 9,500 votes cast four years ago.

Hedlund could not be immediately reached for comment after the unofficial results were posted.

The day after the election, Cowen said he is proud of what he accomplished and will continue to stay involved.

"I hate to lose anything, you know what I mean? I know exactly what I'm up against," he said.

Cowen wished Hedlund luck and hoped for more participation from voters and prospective candidates in the future.

Just under 17% of Weymouth's 41,448 registered voters cast a ballot.

Five at-large councilor seats were open, with one new face joining the Weymouth Town Council after voters supported H. Richard Coughlin over Alyson J. Dossett.

The four incumbents – Michael Molisse, Christopher M. Heffernan, Frederick J. Happel Jr. and Gregory M. Shanahan – were reelected.

In District 4, which covers precincts 10, 11 and 14, council President Arthur Mathews bested Raymond Alongi. Mathews received 70% of the 890 votes.

The fifth sitting councilor-at-large, Lisa Belmarsh, who was first elected in 2021, did not run.
