When is Election Day? Here's everything you need to know about the General Election

The General Election is close: Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Ahead of the busy day, here are some questions you may need to know as you prepare to cast your vote.

What is the General Election?

The General Election is held in the fall to elect candidates to office, unlike the primary, a spring election held to winnow down the field of candidates. General elections are held for local, state and federal offices.

What are the election deadlines?

  • The deadline to register to vote in New Jersey in 2023: Oct. 17.

  • The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot: Oct. 31.

  • The deadline to return mail-in ballots is Nov. 7 and must be postmarked on or before 8 p.m.

How many ways can you vote in New Jersey?

There are three ways you can vote in New Jersey. You can vote by mail ballot, in-person early voting and at your polling station from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

When does the early voting period start?

The early voting period starts Oct. 28 and continues through Nov. 5 in every county. Early voting hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday-Saturday; 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday.

Can New Jersey military and oversees vote?

Yes they can. Voters can request and return ballot electronically by fax or as an email attachment. If fax or email, the ballot must be received by 8 p.m. Nov. 7.

How can I check my voter registration status?

New Jersey resident can check the status on the Am I Registered Page on the New Jersey voter portal.

Where is my polling place?

New Jersey residents can check for their polling location at NJ.gov's election portal.

Will I know if my mail-in ballot was received?

Voters can track their ballot progress by signing into My Voter Record account. A voter's ballot status on the tracker will be updated by each individual county.

I requested a mail-in ballot and did not receive it

Voters who did not receive their requested mail ballot, may be inactive voters. Voters should check their status online but can still vote by provisional ballot at their polling place. The provisional ballots will be reviewed by the county board of elections post-Election Day to determine whether they will be counted.
