Election Day primer: Everything you need to know as polls open in San Joaquin County

The polls are open on Tuesday in San Joaquin County, like others across California and the nation.

There are a number of races in San Joaquin County that will have a large impact.

U.S. Rep Josh Harder, D-10th District, and SJ County Supervisor Tom Patti are vying to be represent San Joaquin County in Congress in the realigned District 9. Longtime Congressman Jerry McNerney opted not to run for another term.

Assemblyman Carlos Villapudua goes up against Tracy Vice Mayor Veronica Vargas as he seeks a second term to represent District 13.

And San Joaquin County Supervisors will have at least two new members as Kathy Miller and Chuck Winn term out of office.

Former Stockton City Councilman Elbert Holman and Stockton City Councilman Paul Canepa seek to replace Miller as the District 2 representative. Steve Ding, former chief of staff to Congressman Richard Pombo; and businessman Steve Colangelo are running to replace Winn as the District 4 representative.

Sol Jobrack seeks a second term to represent District 1 on Stockton City Council. He is being challenged by teacher Michele Padilla.

Several seats are in the mix for Stockton Unified School District, which this year was the focus of a second scathing report from the San Joaquin County Grand Jury over the past two years.

The district is also seeking approval for Measure C, a $215 million bond measure for facilities repair and improvement.

There are also races for Lincoln Unified School Board, San Joaquin Delta College trustees, and city council in Lodi, Manteca, Ripon and Tracy.

More than 385,000 ballots were sent to San Joaquin County voters this election, with about 56,000 returned as of last week.

In the June primary, a flood of ballots were returned to the county Registrar of Voters office a few days before election day.

Mail-in ballots sent by postal mail must be postmarked by Nov. 8 and received no later than seven days after the election.

They can also be returned to the registrar's office, polling place or drop box.

Election results will be available on the Registrar of Voters website beginning at 8 p.m. They will also be updated every two hours until poll ballots are counted. Updates will then be updated by 7 p.m. Tuesdays until all ballots have been counted.
