Trump voter fraud claim is a ‘Freddy Krueger nightmare’: Michigan's Wayne County Board of Canvassers vice chair
Wayne County, Michigan — which includes the city of Detroit — has certified the results of the presidential election after Republican officials initially refused to, alleging discrepancies.
The decision came after Democrats agreed to audit the election results. But now, Republican members of the Board of Canvassers which certified the results in the county, are trying to rescind their votes.
“We absolutely are out of time,” said Jonathan Kinloch, vice chairman of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers. “We absolutely cannot even reconsider or take any action associated with the general election result. This election is certified.”
Kinloch, who is one of the Democrats on the panel, said, “This is now in the custody of the Michigan State Board of Canvassers, for them to act and to certify all of the other offices and proposals that are before them.”
Kinloch added that fraud allegations haven’t been proven, and that Trump’s tactics are failed attempts at interrupting certification of the election.
“I am just tired of this Freddy Krueger nightmare we've been going through,” he said. “It's just so unfortunate.”
The Trump campaign has dropped its last remaining lawsuit in the state of Michigan, claiming that they did so because they won, despite certified election results in Wayne County declaring President-elect Joe Biden the winner with the the majority of votes in the county.
“The lawsuits were going to be dropped anyway, as all if not many of the lawsuits have been dropped across this country,” Kinloch said. “They have not brought evidence in any regard as it relates to demonstrating fraud in any fashion. We didn't find it. They know it doesn’t exist. That's why they're using some of these other tactics to try to interrupt the certification of our election. It will not work.”
President Trump has repeatedly alleged that votes were cast fraudulently in Wayne County, tweeting “‘The numbers have not improved, it is still 71% out of balance’, stated Wayne County, Michigan, Canvassers. ‘There is widespread irregularities in poll numbers.’ There are ‘more votes than people’.”
“The issue that we're talking about is probably around 438, 436 ballots… that are questionable” out of the “800,00 that were cast in Wayne County,” Kinloch said. He noted that there may have been instances where ballots were jammed inside the tabulator and envelopes were run through machines twice, so “just human errors.”
“We're not talking about fraud. We're not talking about corruption,” he said. “We're talking about the typical issues that are seen in every election across America. And what he's [Trump] doing is playing with people's lack of understanding of election processes.”
On Friday, Michigan legislative leaders are set to meet with the president after receiving an invite to the White House. In a tweet, Michigan Senate Majority Leader Aric Nesbitt has also called for: “full, independent audit of the recent election prior to the certification of results. We have seen a number of allegations that range from outright fraud, if true, to terrible mistakes that need to be corrected.” In a letter sent to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, dozens of members of the Michigan legislator have supported the call for an audit.
The meeting has been criticized as an attempt to undermine the election.
