Election roundup: Greer wins mayoral bid in Lyman; Mahaffey to become Chesnee's next mayor

Glenn Greer defeated two others to win the mayoral race in Lyman, one of several races in Spartanburg County Tuesday.

Greer had 293 votes, Rick Hellams had 215 votes and Marc Garcia finished third with 131 votes.

Greer is the apparent successor to outgoing Mayor Larry Chappell.

Greer, the mayoral pro-tem on Town Council, also ran for re-election to Town Council and was among the top three finishers out of eight candidates for three seats.

Adam Crisp got 322 votes, Greer 275 votes, and Hannah Springman Welzel 268 votes. Phil McIntyre finished fourth with 255 votes.

Hellams, who also ran for Town Council, finished fifth with 230 votes, meaning he also lost his seat on council.

Because the third and fourth place finishers, Welzel and McIntyre, were less than 1% apart, there will be a recount Thursday, according to Spartanburg County Elections Director Adam Hammons.

And since Greer will become mayor, there will be a special election at a later date for council once he resigns from council to become mayor, Hammons said.

Certification of votes for all county races is scheduled for Thursday.

"We're happy with the results," Greer said. "We'll choose to wait until the election is certified, then we'll be anxious to see what's next. My intention is to continue the good pace and results that Lyman has enjoyed the past four years. Onward and upward."

Overall voter turnout Tuesday in Spartanburg County was 10%, with 20,868 ballots cast out of 208,643 registered voters.

Greer said the voter turnout in Lyman was good for a municipal election, close to 16%.

The State Election Commission does not break down the turnout for each municipal race, Hammons said.
