Midterm races for Congress and the Florida Legislature are officially on.

And it's quite a plentiful field of suitors for those offices.

Some 29 candidates have filed to run for the four congressional districts that span Palm Beach County, including 15 vying for the District 23 seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton.

A more meager field of eight rivals qualified for the four Florida Senate seats, including state Sen. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, who is running unopposed.

Another 24 candidates qualified to compete for nine Florida House seats.

Candidates for the upcoming 2022 elections had until Friday at noon to submit their paperwork and pay fees to be on the ballot.

This year's midterms follow a redraw of district boundaries in the wake of the 2020 federal census. Under the new Florida redistricting map, Palm Beach County appeared to have no changes in its congressional or state congressional delegations.

The redistricting map included significant changes in northern Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis struck down a congressional district drawn to increase the chances for a Black congressional member to be elected.

In Palm Beach County, U.S. Rep Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick hopes to remain in Congress as she completes her shortened term, which she won in a special election earlier this year, formerly held by the late Congressman Alcee Hastings.

The previous state Senate Districts 31 and 29 were mostly blended together to become District 26. The House districts were similar in its lines but changed the numbers.

Voters can learn more about the new districts here. And they are encouraged to stay abreast of potential changes in their voting precincts or locations. The Supervisor of Elections office for Palm Beach County said it will be sending out voter identification cards soon that will indicate which districts the voter is part of.

The deadline to register or change party affiliation in Palm Beach County for the primary elections is July 25. Early voting will start Aug. 8 to Aug. 21, and the official Election Day for the primaries will be Aug. 23. The general election will be on Nov. 8.
