New Electric Car Startup Says This Sedan Does 0-60 in Under 2.3 Seconds

We've entered a very weird time here, in early 2017. It's an era when the cars promising the quickest, most rocketing acceleration are all battery-electric vehicles. And more puzzling than that, they all seem to be sedans.

Just look at the Lucid Air, an executive-size sedan that claims a 0-60 of 2.5 seconds. Or the surprisingly huge Faraday Future FF 91, with a promised 0-60 of 2.4 seconds. Or the Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous+, which, with a magazine-measured 0-60 of 2.275 seconds, is officially the fastest accelerating car you can buy new today.

Add another super-quick sedan to the pile: Elextra, a previously-unheard-of Swiss-German startup, which claims the angular, all-wheel drive four-seat sedan shown above will do 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in "less than 2.3 seconds."

Elextra says the car was designed in Switzerland, and will be "hand-built near Stuttgart, in Germany, by one of the world's leading companies specialized in low-volume manufacturing." The startup expects to build a maximum of 100 examples of the car.

As for the driveline details, Elextra founder/CEO/designer Robert Palm told Road & Track that "we use well-proven existing components for the electric drivetrain." Does that sound like a hint that the car will be based on Tesla Model S components? We tend to think so, based on the performance claims, the all-wheel drive, and the overall layout of the car.

And a high-performance rebody based on a mass-production platform would be a familiar approach for the folks behind Elextra. Designer Robert Palm's previous projects include the Lyonheart K, a Jaguar E-Type-inspired coupe and roadster intended to be built on a modern Jaguar sports car platform.

"The idea behind Elextra is to combine pure lines reminding of the most exciting Italian supercars of the past," Palm says, highlighting the car's "low, sleek and beautiful design." While the car will not appear at the Geneva Motor Show in March, Elextra promises more pictures and information are coming soon-and as with all out-of-nowhere electric car startups, investors are welcome to apply.
