Electric cars 'hottest trend' at NY Auto Show

STORY: Electric cars were the focus of 2022 New York International Auto Show.

"One of the big things that's happening is sort of a general move towards electrification, it's better for the planet, that kind of thing," said Micah Muzio, editor at Cox Automotive, during a press preview on Wednesday (April 13). "But also there's a real spike in consumer interest in electric cars right now because of rising gas prices, with an average price of over $4 a gallon in the United States right now, at Cox Automotive, we saw a 69 percent jump in interest in electric cars in March versus January, so people are really looking at their options so they don't have to burn down their entire budgets on gasoline."

Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric car is one example.

The vehicle won the World Car of the Year award as well as the World Electric Car and World Car Design trophies at the show.

An all-electric, updated SUV Chrysler Airflow with 350 and 400 miles range is another.
